Antioxidants protect skin cells (and all cells) from free radical damage. Free radical damage and antioxidant imbalances create oxidative stress in the skin and body. Now I know I’m talking another language right now so in short, free radical damage is the process of environmental stressors damaging our cells. This left untreated can lead to skin and health issues.
Some common environmental stressors include : The UV rays from the sun, consuming alcohol (causes oxidative stress), smoking (of all kinds, sorry ) , chronic stress and pollution.
What these activities do (some 100% avoided, some okay in small portions) will cause darker spots on the skin, melasma, and uneven skin tone. Since we can’t stop stress and pollution, wearing an antioxidant based serum everyday is important for your overall skin health.
Using antioxidant rich products can be a preventative treatment as well as a corrective treatment. I recommend everyone having an antioxidant serum in their skin care routine everyday, pretty much forever. Serums tend to have the highest concentration of ingredients making them richer and the most effective product to add. Apply a serum at least once a day but you can 2x a day for quicker results.
Antioxidants are found in plant foods. They slow the damages and help your skin to repair itself. When we are young, our skin doesn’t need this as much. However if we start in our early 20's we have a better start. As we get older and everything slows down and our skin needs a little boost. All antioxidants have different purposes as well, meaning some have added benefits.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant but it also helps boost collagen.
Vitamin A is an antioxidant but helps with exfoliation.
Vitamin B is an antioxidant but also helps with reducing inflammation.
An antioxidant serum along with a SPF are the BEST items to have in your daily routine to keep your skin youthful. Antioxidants can be used tab any part of your day but if you were to choose one, choose the morning since it will protect your skin cells out in the world.
